About Working Memory

Working memory is an important brain function. It helps us temporarily store and manage the information required to carry out complex cognitive tasks, such as learning, reasoning, comprehension and planning. Working memory keeps information in the mind for a short time, typically for a few seconds, in order to use that information for thinking and to guide behavior. We use our working memory throughout our daily life, to remember instructions, solve problems, control impulses, focus attention, and comprehend long sentences such as this one.

Working memory has been identified as a core component of most attention deficits.

Signs of working memory deficits are difficulties focusing, being easily distracted, difficulties starting and finishing tasks, and forgetting instructions. Leading researchers have found that since the brain is more plastic than previously believed, it is possible to train and thereby improve working memory.

Cogmed Working Memory Training

Cogmed Working Memory Training is a software-based, in-home intervention designed to improve working memory in people with attention deficits. It was developed by game developers, working closely with psychologists and medical researchers.

Proven in placebo-controlled clinical trials and published in peer-reviewed journals, studies have demonstrated that upon completion of Cogmed Working Memory Training, 80% of participants have significantly improved their ability to concentrate and use complex reasoning skills.

Cogmed Working Memory Training is suitable for anybody, from the age of four and up, with specific versions designed for different age levels. The training involves a series of active, engaging computer games (exercises) played at home five days a week for five weeks. Every participant has a Personal Cogmed Coach who leads the training, analyzes results and provides encouragement through weekly phone calls. An office visit is not necessary.
